Language of Surfaces Exhibition
Luisa Manea venue Bailey Crystalbrook

Materials talk
Languages of Surfaces is an exhibition that explores how materials speak. In this body of work, Luisa Manea invites viewers to consider surface as a kind of language — where clay, fabric, paint, and found materials communicate through texture, form, and touch.
Across ceramics, painting, sculpture, and wearable works, the exhibition blurs the boundaries between art forms. A dress becomes sculpture, clay echoes the softness of textile, and paint builds quiet landscapes of texture. Each work carries its own voice, asking us to look slowly and listen to what materials reveal.
Set within the spaces of Crystalbrook Bailey in Cairns, the exhibition unfolded as both installation and performance. Wearable artworks moved through the room in a small fashion parade, transforming static objects into living forms and reminding us that art can exist not only on walls, but in motion, in bodies, and in the everyday world.
Languages of Surfaces was proudly supported by the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) — a partnership between the Queensland Government and Cairns Regional Council, supporting artists and creative projects across the region.
Layers connecting
At the centre of Languages of Surfaces is a quiet curiosity about how meaning is built through touch and material. Layers of paint are worked and reworked until colour begins to breathe through the surface. Clay is shaped, glazed, and fired so that it holds both fragility and strength. Fabrics and found elements become part of the visual conversation, each carrying its own history. Rather than treating materials as separate disciplines, the exhibition allows them to meet and respond to one another, forming a dialogue between painting, ceramics, sculpture, and wearable form. In this way, the works invite viewers to slow down and notice the subtle language of surfaces — the marks, textures, and gestures that reveal the hand of the artist and the stories held within the material itself.

About the artist
Luisa Manea’s practice is driven by curiosity and a refusal to be confined to a single medium. Working across painting, ceramics, sculpture, collage, and wearable art, she approaches each material as part of an expanding visual vocabulary. Her background in fashion and design continues to influence her work, bringing a sense of movement, form, and craftsmanship into the studio. This diversity allows her practice to shift fluidly between disciplines, where a ceramic object may carry the elegance of textile, and a painting may hold the structure of sculpture. Through this openness to materials and ideas, Luisa creates work that is layered, experimental, and deeply personal, reflecting an artist who is continually exploring new ways for art to speak.
Thanks to RADF
My heartfelt thanks to the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF), Cairns Regional Council, and the Queensland Government for supporting Languages of Surfaces and helping bring this exhibition to life. I am also deeply grateful to everyone who came to experience the work, shared conversations, and supported the project with their presence. A special thank you to the collectors who purchased pieces from the exhibition — your support allows artists like myself to continue creating and contributing to the cultural life of our community.
