Gilded Silence
This painting was inspired by the unconventional beauty of ballerinas. A dancer may appear angular, hollow-cheeked or almost masculine in her leanness and muscular strength—yet, once she begins to move, she becomes utterly beautiful.
I was drawn to that uneven balance: softness held beside strength, fragility beside discipline, and a face that does not conform to traditional ideas of prettiness. Her beauty is not passive or perfect. It comes from presence, character and the quiet power of what her body can do.
Gilded Silence celebrates the kind of beauty that reveals itself slowly—the beauty we feel rather than simply see.
