Language of Surfaces An Exhibition by Luisa Manea

On 5 December, the foyer of Crystalbrook Bailey transformed into something quietly magical. Language of Surfaces opened not simply as an exhibition, but as a living conversation between materials, bodies, and space. An evening shaped by collaboration, movement, and connection.
The exhibition runs
until late January 2026, and has already evolved. A number of works have been purchased by both local and interstate collectors, making space for new pieces to be introduced as others move on. In this way, the exhibition continues to shift, rather than remain static.
As the exhibition is unmanned and fully accessible to the public, I’ve made a habit of visiting most mornings, dusting plinths, checking surfaces, and quietly spending time with the work. There has been the expected wear of a public space, including one damaged piece so far , but this feels part of allowing art to live openly, rather than behind barriers.
One of the great joys of the exhibition has been meeting hotel guests as they pass through the foyer. I’ve received consistent, generous feedback, including a memorable conversation with a young Polish couple staying at the hotel for their honeymoon. The bride told me that each time she walks past, she can’t help but wander through, drawn back again and again to explore the works on display.
Opening night featured a fashion parade, bringing the work into motion. A group of wonderful local models generously volunteered their time and energy, approaching the experience with excitement and care. A close friend loaned her apartment so the models could change and prepare, and one of the models, Anna, who is also a makeup artist, created beautiful looks that complemented the individuality of each piece.
Seeing so many family and friends attend the opening was deeply moving. The support in the room was genuine, warm, and wholehearted. It meant more to me than words can easily express.
Language of Surfaces reflects the full breadth of my practice, bringing together couture garments, painting, textiles, ceramics, and sculptural elements. The exhibition is rooted in the belief that art is not defined by medium, but by how materials speak to one another.
With the help of a close friend, delicate circuit-like floral forms were created and placed across the plinths, adding a quiet, dreamlike rhythm to the space.
As the exhibition continues its life in the foyer of Crystalbrook Bailey, I feel incredibly fortunate, supported by community, embraced by viewers, and grateful to share work that speaks in many languages, yet belongs to one voice.
